DHOL DHOLOK CHOLOM
Dhol and dholok are
special musical instruments played specially during the Holi-Sankirtana,
the colorful spring festival that is celebrated in Manipur and
throughout India in the month of February and March. During this sankirtana,
jets of different colored water are directed at the participants
as well as the audience from a specially prepared hand pump.
Everyone is joyfully bathed in a stream of colors in a few
seconds.
Dhol-dholok cholom is a sophisticated classical dance
number. This has fine athletic and masculine character in which
the drummer of Dhol exhibits intricate patterns of
beating the dhol while performing difficult physical feats of
strength and artistry demanding involvement of the whole body.The
participants as well as the spectators alike get emotionally
involved in such a dance.
