September:

*Ceremonial Installation of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Washington by the Prime Minister. The statue, sculpted by Gautam Pal, was commissioned and gifted by the ICCR:

* A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, sculpted by Gautam Pal, was officially dedicated on 16th September by the Prime Minister (who was on an official visit to the U.S.A.) and U.S. President Clinton in a small, triangular park (owned by the US federal government) across from the Indian Embassy on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington. The statue, just under nine feet high, stands on a 16-ton block of rough-hewn granite. The inscription below it is : "My Life Is My Message." President Clinton said after the installation : "It's very important for the United States to make a memorial to Gandhi... (he) provided the inspiration to Martin Luther King, which spread to the civil rights movement and brought an end to the business of slavery and brought integrity to the democratic ideal."
